Elshan Ghasimi on the Museum Island in Berlin

Dear friends,

The next few months are all about the sounds of classical Persian music. What strange coincidence that Cate Blanchett received the Lion of Venice for her role in the film Tár last week. Fiction and yet a story that goes close to the truth.

This autumn we have a unique highlight on the museum island in Berlin: In November and December 2022, the Iranian musician and composer Elshan Ghasimi will premiere her reinterpretation of the Radīf in the James-Simon-Galerie. A historical moment, because for the first time a woman will systematically reinterpret the 1400 years, and more, old repertoire.

In the first chapter of the composition project, Ghasimi devotes herself to the melodies of the Dastgāh-e Shur module in four concerts. The opening concert on November 10, 2022 is introduced by the renowned British music and opera critic Michael Church and the director of the Museum of Islamic Art Prof. Dr. Stefan Weber. Further concerts will take place on Thursdays at 7 p.m. on November 17th and 24th and December 1st in the auditorium of the James Simon gallery on the Museum Island in Berlin.

Before that, on October 7th, the third part of the Elies Miniatures concert cycle - the flower and death - premieres in Berlin. Since 2018, this concert series has been talking about the life of the mathematician, poet and Quran researcher El Arbi Bouqdib, who died in 2016. Using selected objects from Bouqdib's estate, the "El Arbi Bouqdib Archive", and their cinematic, literary and, above all, musical interpretation, the story of a traveler between the Orient and Occident takes shape in the concerts.

For the flower and death, the virtuoso and master of classical Persian music Elshan Ghasimi composed 19 new compositions to 19 objects from the archive and demonstrates them, accompanied by the cinematic staging of the same through Stark & Shakupa, in her performance.

To get an impression of the master of classical Persian music, you can watch the film of the director duo Stark & Shakupa above. It was created in 2021 at the exhibition Iran - art and culture from five millennia in the James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin.

Marian Weeks

Circular III 22

Marian Weeks

8th of April ∙ 6 p.m. ∙ to 7th of May 2022

Dear friends and visitors,

Once again, I am pleased to draw your attention to the opening of the exhibition GABRIEL Marianische Antiphonen I-III. This Friday at 6 p.m. the doors will open. Parallel to the opening at NADAN, Gabriel will perform on the venerable Bayerischer Platz in Berlin.

This marks the opening of the Marian weeks. I would also like to invite you to the fourth part of the series Gott lacht [God laughs] on Sunday, 24th of April, already. Reinhard Knodt, cultural theorist and philosopher of correspondence, will connect another central concept of (European) cultural history with the current exhibition and invites you to a sophisticated discussion. As always, participation is free of charge. Wine and bread will be served and the number of participants is limited to twelve.

We will find beauty cast into forms on the 28th of April 2022 in Bremen. Elshan Ghasimi will perform together with Dieter Weische, master of the Japanese shakuhachi bamboo flute, for the first time. A meeting of Persian and Japanese tradition. Classical and contemporary.

On the 13th of April, the group exhibition MITbeSTIMMEn opens at Kunstverein Tiergarten in Berlin with contributions by Thesaurós artist Michal Martychowiec. You are warmly invited to this as well.

GABRIEL Marianische Antiphonen I – III // OPENING 8 April 2022

Opening: Friday the 8th of April 2022, 6 p.m.
Duration: 9th of April - 7th of May 2022

Dear friends,

it gives me great pleasure to invite you to the exhibition, opening on the 8th of April at NADAN at the Bayerischer Platz in Berlin.

Excerpt from the press release:

The wanderer Gabriel lives on the street - at first glance indistinguishable from homeless people who are defencelessly exposed to the world. "Pilgrimage is always also witnessing and my trace, laid on this map like the ephemeral breath of a string, is just that: Testimony and memory."

Gabriel's long-term performance WEG (approx. 2372 days) began on the 15th of September 2015 and continues to this day, taking him on the great pilgrimage routes of Santiago de Compostela, Rome, and Jerusalem - with only a tent, everything on his body, accompanied by four large black dogs.

The exhibition Marianische Antiphonen I – III focuses on a performance cycle that took place in and around the Marian pilgrimage site of Fátima in Portugal from the 5th of August to the 7th of August 2019. The documentary photographs of the performance, which like all of Gabriel's performances took place without announcement and in public space, are combined and presented in the exhibition with poetic texts, fragments, and conceptual works.

In the summer of 1917, in the central Portuguese town of Fátima, the mother goddess Mary is said to have appeared to three shepherd children a total of six times at an old holm oak. She entrusted them with a prophecy that went down in history as the Three Mysteries of Fátima. The title Marianische Antiphonen [Marian Antiphons] refers to the chants addressed to the mother of God (antiphons = alternating chants) in the Christian liturgy for more than 1.500 years. They also refer to the motif of ‘the Virgin of Mercy’, which inspired them from the beginning of the development of this series. Mary as a loving, warming, understanding, and protecting mother.

GABRIEL is a tale and cosmos by performance artist Edwin W. Moes and art historian JMH Schindele. Since 2019 they have been operating as the artist duo Gabriel & Schindele. The main character of this story is called Gabriel and is embodied by Moes.

European Identity

CIRCULAR I 22

"Posterity will not be able to comprehend that we have once again had to live
in such dense darknesses after it had already once become light."

Sebastian Castellio in 'De arte dubitandi' 1562

Arona, in the garden of Mariposa
2nd of March 2022

Dear Sir or Madam,

In the face of a turning of the times, we stand amazed, at times frightened and new. Our hearts and thoughts are with the Ukrainian people. Many certainties and moral convictions disappeared or turned into their opposite overnight. Yes, Europe is no longer an island of the blessed in the middle of a sea of storm.

The question 'what could a European identity look like?', seams suddenly answered; the 'anything goes' of postmodernity has come to an end. A disenchantment with the limits of the world's goodness and an intuitive, however self-evident, and yet so surprising agreement on what constitutes the core of our societies and that this must be protected differently in the future.

Our latent identity, now felt as an ethical and individual urge, is finally becoming clear to us as solidarity and concern. And surely many are also experiencing what it means to have this unearned privilege. The fortuitous luck of being allowed to live in such rich and free societies. In an era of long peace and greatest liberality. We must take care of them, our culture and societies. Everyone is responsible for them in his or her own way. The work of Bublitz as ‚mental/spiritual guest workers‘ tries to do so with the means of art, philosophy, the activation of history, the magical and, most recently again, with the poetic potential of religion/theology.

Already now, I would like to invite you to an exhibition that is very important to me. On the 8th of April, the exhibition GABRIEL Marianische Antiphonen I - III will open at NADAN on Bayerischer Platz. The artist duo Gabriel & Schindele are behind this, consisting of the Dutch concept and performance artist Edwin W. Moes and myself. The experimental set-up intends some invocations of mother deities, carried by desires for wholeness, healing and a praise of history.

Thank you for your attention,
JMH Schindele
