Theme 3
The Last Man and the First God (On Art and the Birth of God in Post-Secular Societies)

“One no longer becometh poor or rich; both are too burdensome. Who still wanteth to rule? Who still wanteth to obey? Both are too burdensome. […] They have their little pleasures for the day, and their little pleasures for the night, but they have a regard for health. ‘We have discovered happiness,’ – say the last men, and blink thereby.”

Friedrich Nietzsche – Thus Spoke Zarathustra

Dear reader,

The philosopher Reinhard KnodtElshan Ghasimi and Bublitz cordially invite you to the third part of the lecture and discussion series “God laughs” in Steinhöfel Castle near Berlin. The theme of our upcoming meeting on September 23rd is ‘The Last Man and the First God’.

In correspondence to the current exhibition by Michal Martychowiec (Message from the Last Man) Knodt sets out on the trail of the last man into the dark forest of today’s Gods Night and finds there – the First God. Sounds mystical? It is.

We are particularly pleased that we could enthuse the tar virtuoso and master Elshan Ghasimi (Classical Persian Music) for the event. Ghasimi will initiate the lecture and discussion with a concert in the chapel of Steinhöfel Castle!

Program

14:30 – 15:30 Arrival & coffee

15:30 – 16:30 Walk in the castle park and concert in the castle chapel

16:30 – 19:00 Lecture and discussion ‘God laughs III

19:00 – xx:xx Dinner in the castle. For interested parties, you can also book a night in the hotel within the castle.

Nachricht vom letzten Menschen
The Mythology of Michal Martychowiec

Dear visitor,

Tomorrow, Saturday (6 p.m.), Michal Martychowiec's solo exhibition will open at Thesaurós in Uhlandstrasse, Berlin. Its hopeful title: Nachricht vom letzten Menschen [Message from the Last Man]. Please feel warmly invited to this celebration!

Michal Martychowiec - When i see a glass

Since the last e-mail already caused some controversy - in particular about the figure of the 'panda' and its association with the last man - here a passage from the exhibition text as an appetizer. How does the artist come to associate the sweet, small, cuddly and oh so lovable creature with the last man and incorporation of decadence? Yes, to put it in community with the nihilistic god of death himself?

"In Martychowiec's work the panda is an unmasking symbol of decadence at the centre of a modernity that has long become empty. The panda stands for the last man at the end of history, bound between neoliberal normativity and the decoupling from his own historical-cultural becoming. As a pop cultural symbol, it is omnipresent and can also be interpreted as a medium of Chinese 'soft-power' politics. Pandas found their biological niche through a genetic mutation in the spine, which allowed them to sit comfortably. Bamboo, their primary food source, is poor in nutrients and must be eaten 16 hours a day. The species, which is already extinct in the wild, a museums piece, mostly lives in so-called panda villas. There they are looked after by guards and psychologists. Most reproductions occur through artificial insemination."

Michal Martychowiec - What is often hard

Ask yourself with us what might be the message of the last man.

Certainly, we do not know and can only interpret.

Yours,

Julian M. H. Schindele
