Mnemosyne. In search of the European Identity (Abstract)

Mnemosyne is a ten-year, pan-European and civic project. It is a new way of considering exhibitions, memory policy and culture at a time of the greatest threat since the Second World War. Initially launched 3 years ago as an exhibition project, Mnemosyne has now become a nexus for the most diverse protagonists (universities, schools, [technology] companies, human rights NGOs and museums among others).

The project derives its name from the Greek goddess of memory, Mnemosyne, from which the word memory also stems. The basic assumption of Mnemosyne. In search of the European identity is that without (shared) memory, no (European) identity can be formed. This applies to each individual, as well as to collectives, states and unions.

Just as talking about oneself reveals a person's identity, communities, too, create their identity by means of narratives. This occurs through memories with a national, or, in the particular case of Europe, a pan-European reference being passed on. Europe lacks these broad, common, positive narratives.

The multimedia exhibition, research and mediation project presented here is embarking on a search for just those ideas and stories of a common European self-image, which recognizes the differences of the various national states and vaults over them. It would like to invite people to identify with Europe and joyfully exclaim: Yes, I’m a European! Yes, I can gladly identify with these values and with this community! In this sense, the Mnemosyne project follows a historical-political aim.

A complex visualization of cultural history involving the newest technology and oldest myths will give rise to a new combination of historical narrative, art exhibition and participatory project.

Mnemosyne Prelude 2. Elshan Ghasimi
The letter of politics or rules for kings
part of "The Kings – UTC 7 hours parallel performance"

Ghasimi's seven hour-long piece The letter of politics or rules for kings is embedded within a larger show with approximately 30 performers – The Kings. This in turn is the climax and concluding event of the exhibition Insights into fleeting lives developed by Barbara Caveng and Dachil Sado, which has been running at the Museum of European Cultures since the beginning of the year.

With her title The letter of politics or rules for kings, Ghasimi chooses the call of her Persian compatriot Nizam al-Mulk (1018 – 1092 AD), this greatest amongst the grand viziers, who headed the Seljuk empire for several generations. He also wrote a book about statesmanship, which apparently influenced Macciavelli, the title of which Ghasimi has borrowed; a manual about governance and thereby about clever strategy.

At the same time, Ghasimi's performance is the second prelude for Mnemosyne. A prelude for a goddess of the future – the word 'memory' also stems from her – and a reminder that culture is always a phenomenon of dispute, syncretic crystal, a result of untold dialogues.

UTC 7 HOURS PARALLEL PERFORMANCE, 01. July 2017, from 1pm

XENIEN
ENGEL MIT SPHINX GESICHTEN / 2. CELEBRATION

We are happy to invite you to the second celebration within the exhibition Engel mit Sphinx Gesichten (Sphinx faced Angels). Reason of the celebration is the inauguration of the stone ‚Der Kommende Gott‘ (The Coming God) at the exhibition space Dzialdov in Berlin. (Other stones have been installed in the following ateliers and studios: Martin Bothe, Daniel Gustav Cramer, Jaromir Hladík, Fabian Knecht, Markues and since 7 october at the studio Michael Müller).

It is an addition to Dzialdovs exhibition Heidegger stinks, like always a comment and another experiment with the ‚historical readymade‘ which Bublitz and the artist Michal Martychowiec are working on.

The exhibition text of Dzialdov reads as follows: „On 23 September 1966, and then again on 17–18 June 1968, the photo journalist and Filmmaker Digne Meller Marcovicz (*1934; †2014) took a series of photographs of the philosopher Martin Heidegger, published two years after the philosopher’s death in 1978.

The remaining copies of the original and only print run of the Stuttgart Verlag Fey edition have recently been returned from the distributors because they smell.

This exhibition is dedicated to the historic residue of printed matter and its subsequent metamorphosis into an olfactory trail.

The remaining 900 copies of the book will be given away on a first come first served basis in exchange for a voluntary donation.“

Digne Meller Marcovicz visited Heidegger on the occasion of an interview by the magazine Der Spiegel. In this interview, published 10 years later, the philosopher is being quoted with „only a god can safe us“. This is a direct reference to the poet Friedrich Hölderlin and Heideggers life-long dialogue with him. Friedrich Hölderin is summoning the ‚Coming God‘whose existence is yet to be proved and revealed.

The celebration starts at 7pm at Dzialdov. Maybachufer 43, 12047 Berlin and is part of:

XENIEN
ENGEL MIT SPHINX GESICHTEN

After a year of research journey Bublitz is back to public. Five years ago we started the cycle Handlungsbereitschaft - Draft of a generation at the end of history which approached, the now omnipresent, question of identity and which drew a psychogramm of the generation being born between 1980 and 1990. The new point of interest and focus is a question deriving directly out of this endevor. How can modernity be bridged? Which forms will the next (European) Renaissance take?

The new exhibition cycle Xenien starts with the exhibition Engel mit Sphinx Gesichten. Developed, curated and emanated from the work of Michal Martychowiec.
Since we came to the decision not to associate any-more with the insipid term of 'Opening' we are all the more happy to invite you to the first celebration this Sunday at Claudisstraße with a conceptual as musical broadening by AXE APE. Furthermore we are also happy to introduce our new colleague Nils Fock.

Hilarion Manero "Ausscharre des z"

H201415M, Kala Kathedral, 45 x 110,2 cm, Inkjet Print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta

With Ausscharre des z, Hilarion Manero is taking on yet another name. H201415M. Likewise, he has decided to cast off the insignia of the artist, henceforth dubbing himself "essayist", a friend of the open form and experimentation. His new activity will be Dichtungsgraphie.

This is reminiscent of the first exhibition that was accompanied by Bublitz, "What is a psychochromatic artist?" at Sprechsaal, located in Berlin-Mitte's Marienstraße. While this served as a retrospective on Manero's painterly oeuvre produced over recent years in isolation, with Ausscharre z we now witness the integration of some of these paintings into a larger work context as well as two or three islands from the Book of Death.

The islands are the refuges of the Gods, in his own words: "They go onto the islands to sojourn there". For otherwise, they would be everywhere - whereas I prefer to imagine them as symbolically centered psychic energies accompanying us, looking out for us, embodying potentials. For H201415M they are theatrical plays. Roles embodying personifications of our own comportment as human beings. The spheres: Gods, unaging as are eyes.

Before Chronos, the Oceanid Clymene is exposed to Uranus's whims, Nox, in the second Dichtungsgraphie, is dwelling on the threshold of Plutonium's gates. Both protogenoi are resting inside the blackness of a landscape. Surrounded by rocks who are observers. Through the presentation, the familiar is rendered strange and thus flees the possible gaze. Might still touch because of that. This (Hilarion Manero insists) is by no means about the Uncanny.

Quite the contrary, it is about the Magical. And the Possible.

This is why the works on view may be described as moralist pieces. Fortunately, this would be too reductive, and shall therefore remain undetermined. For the mentioned figures would encounter radiant objects: "We have to decide ourselves". Only obliquely mentioned in this exhibition, Power serves as the essayist's central point of reference. How all is exercising power.

Conscious, unconscious, without consciousness. H201415M's prime attachment figure these days: Charlie Chaplin.

The second complex forms an erotic ensemble: Representing the female principle inside the exhibition, a group of dryads has gathered by a creek.

Ausscharre des z consists of the reflections of a mythically inclined contemporary, bound together in two and a half acts. The general topic is the historical involvement of our time - and the way in which we man it.
